Chess at the Car Wash

So I took my daughter to her alternate peer group meeting today and knew I had some downtime between when we got there and when I would need to attend my meetings with the group. So I bundled a chess book I have been reading and a small magnetic set to work out the moves in the book (since I am unable to envision the board to the degree the authors write towards).

Well, when I set up the board, a gentleman came up to me and asked if I played chess, so I invited him to sit and play a game. This is much more fun than reading a book! His name is Jamaal and so the game started.

We attracted a small crowd over time. One little girl would come over to watch us clearly playing a game. One older man came by to tell us how he learned chess from a girlfriend who used to beat him every game. Others just came by to watch and talk amongst themselves.

In the end, we had time to play two games before my car was finished. He was waiting for a locksmith since the car wash locked his keys in the car. The end result was that I lost both games. Both losses where the same sort of losses too – I was so caught up in what I was doing that I was not paying attention to what he was doing.

“The way he plays chess demonstrates a man’s whole nature.”
– Stanley Ellin

Maybe Ellin was right…. At least Jamaal let me capture his victory on film….
